CMS has made progress in tackling the daunting issues of developing a meaningful VBP reimbursement scheme. While the ultimate focus of VBP is to improve the fragmented health care system in the U.S., it is also a fight to save Medicare from sinking the national ecconomy even further. Forward thinkers in CMS like Dr. Tom Valuck and Herb Kuhn have led the program from infancy into the early walking stages. Dr. Carolyn Clancy's practice (the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality) is moving the agenda by researching and developing clinical guidelines that will serve as the foundation for VBP. http://www.ahrq.gov/ There is a great unknown however: what is going to happen with a change of administration? The new President will find a robust program in development and while there may be changes in direction, the train seems to have left the station on VBP being the government and private payors choice to reduce health care costs, errors and improve the quality of U.S. health care. The two major presidential candidates have not focused their campaign efforts on Value-Based Purchasing iniatives in any meaningful way. Neither candidate has expressed a reservation that I have seen about the basic concept.
